𓆰 An account of Ferrante; and Pettiere, his steed ④
A Mythic Bastionland run
The Balì wind drives Ferrante and Bonaventura to a river atop the hills, where they find a fisherman, Maffeo, beset by the monstrous Magalà s. Ferrante’s polearm and the squire’s dagger wound the beast, forcing its retreat. Maffeo, exiled for casting away his family’s heirloom, swears there may be many Magalàs and speaks of seeking a unique fur to win back his place. When the beast charges again, knight and squire strike true, buying time to flee downriver and camp safely in the tall grass at dusk.

PREVAILING WIND ¤ Balì
Throughout the afternoon, the Balì, the wind that carries the sudden, perseveres, accompanying the Knight and his squire towards the hill top. There are no trees, but rocks and boulders abound.

As the stocky steed Pettiere leads the ascent, Gobba, the resilient mule follows suit, aided by the breeze. The hill top is bare; stones and moss are a carpet on which spiky chards grow undisturbed. The wind brings the sound of water to the ears of the roaming two; gushes and spurts give birth to a river in the centre of the hill top. Water pours down the downwards slope opposite the one Ferrante and squire came up from.

OMEN 2 ¤ A lost fisherman washed up on the riverbank. A might newt is sniffing around the shaken man.
Might that be the Magalà s, the beast the monks were trying to appease?
A caress on Pettiere's neck prompts the horse to let out a restless height. The trusted polearm is now held firmly by the knight's sure hand. Bonaventura searches comfort in passing his hand on Gobba's head, whispering something.
The beast's scales shine of the white light of the afternoon; its eyes frantically scanning the fallen man in front of them. The fallen man does not move, but his teeth rattles betray his presence.
The Balì shakes the steed's hair, as Pettiere gains speed. One of the Magalàs eyes leaves the fallen man and stares at the incoming charging knight: a bifurcated tongue erupts from tense scaly lips.

The tip of the long weapon perforates the shoulder of the beast, planting itself in between scales. The Magalàs shrieks painfully and thick dark blood stains the polearm.
The newt retracts suddenly, with an agility that one could not take for granted - given the size of it - and with the Balì covering its retreat.
The fallen man, on the ground, rolls back on his back while tears of relief wet his sun-hardened skin.
Bonaventura approaches on Gobba and rapidly gets a hold of the polearm, immediately cleaning it of the beast's blood with a cotton rag, stained by endless shades of red.

As the man gets up with a groan and with Pettiere's help, he introduces himself as Maffeo, a fisherman exiled by his family for having thrown a family heirloom at the Magalàs to avoid having his fingers and eyes be taken by it.

The tall, big fisherman drinks water offered by Bonaventura, adding that the only way for him to be given back his loved boat and to be reintroduced into the family is for him to bring back the prized unique fur to his family.
The winds placed him on the wrong path and he was caught by thirst when the Magalàs found him. He swears that there might be more than one Magalà s, as the old butcher down at the village described it as seven time bigger than a horse, while the young Agrippo, a kid with one eye, said it had two heads. The knight decides he does not have enough time to hear the description made by the daughter of a second cousin thrice removed because the beast starts charging again, unseen, with a loud screech.

The polearm strikes once again and Bonaventura's dagger dips sharply into the beast's side. The newt retreats once again with the favour of the wind. The group decides to use that window as their opportunity to follow course and descend the hill flanking the river.
After dusk has fallen, they camp in a meadow protected by tall grass, far enough from the water to convince the fisherman that the are not all going to die.
